Lang Lang – Holden

Hot on the heels of announcing the closure of Australian manufacturing operations by 2017, GM-subsidiary Holden has decided to keep it’s Lang Lang engineering and test facility open and operational.

Although cynics have labelled the move nothing more than a marketing stunt – especially in view of the sales crash since the announced manufacturing retreat – it remains a firm vote of confidence by a multinational for Australia’s engineering capability.

As far as we are concerned at All Torque, any level of investment in the Australian automotive sector by manufacturers is welcome.  The Lang Lang facility has already played a significant part in Australia’s automotive history.  Remaining operational means that it can also play a role into the future, possibly for more manufacturers.

Lang Lang History

The first Holdens to be put through their paces at the Lang Lang facility were FCs back in 1958, although the majority of future work will be in ensuring GM’s imported offerings are suitable for Australian conditions.

Nearly every Australian family has a Holden story to tell.  This video gives an insight into “Australia’s Driving Future” from the ’50s.

DSM ComInTec Torque Limiter

comintec DSM

ComInTec has developed a new modular torque limiter – the DSM – as an answer to some of the problems presented by high speed applications in heavy industry.

Specifically aimed at usage in mills, extruders, conveyors, and in the mining and earthmoving machinery spheres, the DSM caters for high torque, high speed and large shaft diameters.

DSM Technical Characteristicscomintec DSM

  • Safety device with full steel construction offering mechanical strength
  • Free rotation after disengagement with low residual torque
  • Maintenance free
  • Excellent performance / weight ratio
  • Compact and robust construction
  • Suitable for high rotation speeds
  • Simple system for calibration and re-engagement
  • Flexibility in performance thanks to the modularity of the assembly
  • Protected from external agents

DSM – Ex Factory Options

  • Available with flexible coupling to dampen starting torque, absorb vibration and accommodate possible shaft misalignment
  • Available with rigid disc coupling for backlash-free transmission
  • Possibility to incorporate a limit switch plat in order to have an electric signal

Calibration of the Device

The calibration torque is externally adjustable and is achieved by turning the adjuster not to increase or decrease the spring pressure.  The adjustment ring nut has outer circumference notches, while on the module body there is a reference mark.  For each rotation of the nut corresponding to one notch, a torque figure is obtained.  This figure is a result of the nut rotation and the number of modules mounted.

It is important that all nuts of single modules are adjusted in the same way.  Calibration tables are used to assist in this function.  Once the required calibration is obtained, the adjuster nut is locked in position radially by a set screw.

DSM Availability

The DSM series is available on short lead times ex the ComInTec factory in Italy.  We receive our shipments from ComInTec regularly.

WEG Payback App

The new WEG Payback App is something that we have been playing around with lately, and it is well worth consideration.

weg payback

WEG Payback App Details

WEG has developed the new application to assist design engineers, production staff and even purchasing people to understand the advantages (both in kW/h and dollars saved, as well as CO2 emissions) of using high-efficiency electric motors in mainstream industrial applications.

The App estimates a simplified Return On Investment, by using a model that contrasts substituting an existing motor for one of WEG’s new W22 high-efficiency motors.  The same applies to using a frequency inverter in the application.

WEG Payback App Availability

The WEG Payback App is available both in the Apple Store for iOS devices and on Google Play for Android devices.  The best way to find it is by searching ‘Payback WEG’ in the relevant store.

Once again, WEG is demonstrating their commitment to energy efficiency in electric motors by offering this free tool.  All Torque shares WEG’s push for continuous improvement in this field and is proud to feature as a supply partner for this and future developments.

Bonfiglioli and All Torque

bulk handlingAll Torque Transmissions is proud of the story that Bonfiglioli displayed in the recent Australian Bulk Handling Review (Jan/Feb 2014).

The story outlines our selection and supply of Trasmital planetary gear units, Bonfiglioli ‘A’ and ‘F’ series units and WEG hazardous area electric motors for one of our customer’s bulk handling applications.  In a tripartite alliance featuring both Bonfiglioli and our customer, we worked to deliver the right drive package both cost-effectively and in a time-efficient manner.

We agree with the article, in that flexibility is just as important as outright performance when it comes to gear drive design.  We believe that the flexibility offered by Trasmital planetary drives coupled to ‘A’ series bevel-helical units enables us to offer the customer exactly what the application calls for: ultra-slow speed and extremely high torque.

Trasmital planetary gear units are compact, price competitive and deliver a high amount of output torque for their overall size.

‘A’ series bevel-helicals and ‘F’ series gear reducers have the added benefit of being modular, space effective and the flexibility of universal mounting.

Bonfiglioli and All Torque – An Enduring Partnershipbonfiglioli

Bonfiglioli Transmission Australia has been a supply partner of All Torque Transmissions for over a decade, and we are delighted to work alongside them in major design applications such as this, with the knowledge that we have the full technical support of a global manufacturer at our disposal.

For even the most diverse range of applications, Bonfiglioli has the correct geared motor or reduction unit for the task.  That is why we are proud to have our joint efforts featured in Bulk Handling Magazine, and why we look forward to our partnership continuing to remain strong.

Hot Cross Buns

hot cross buns 1Hot cross buns have been in the shops for months already, long before Easter was even being thought of by the kiddies.

At All Torque Transmissions, we could have told you this a while ago, as we have seen production at a few of our bakery customers switch over to the little fruit buns with the tell-tale cross.

Australians enjoy hot cross buns in a variety of styles.  Of course, there is the traditional version, but it is the alternative versions that seem to get the most attention.

There is one version with chocolate chips instead of currants, but the latest trend is for the coffee flavoured variety.  This is probably more in keeping with the obsession with coffee that Australians have!

Hot Cross Buns: Productionhot cross buns

The production of hot cross buns mirrors that of standard fruit buns, with the added process of putting the white dough strips on top.

The power transmission equipment involved normally has to cope with high heat transference, as well as wash down conditions.

We have already had a few things to say about some of the issues with power transmission in the food production industry.
